Wheelchair Accessible Private Room at the Canmore Downtown Hostel

I was very impressed with the Canmore Downtown Hostel. They are located in the newly built ‘Shops of Canmore’ complex and are in a prime location to walk/roll to the different places around town. There is an underground parkade with elevator access, that is open from 7am-7pm (but hostel staff have a card to access until 10:30pm when they leave if need be). There is plenty of parking available out front, and they will give you a pass to put on your dash when you check in.

They provided a pillow case, a sheet, and towels at check in. The beds had fitted sheets on they and a cozy duvet folded at the end. When we checked out we put the sheets and pillowcases into the laundry bin outside of the door.

The facility is beautiful, very clean and modern. Definitely the nicest hostel I have ever stayed at. There is a lounge area with board games if you want to chill and hang out there. There is also a kitchen if you want to cook up your own meals. There is also a laundry room available to use as well.

Very happy with my first hostel experience as a wheelchair user

We stayed in “Room S” the barrier free accessible room. The room is located closest to the elevator through the door to the left, it honestly felt like our own private entrance, and it was nice to have direct access to the room without wheeling the long way around. There was even an accessible lower level wheelchair height peep hole in the door!

In the room there was a bunk bed, and an attached private accessible bathroom. The bathroom was awesome, it had a roll in shower with a fold down bench and roll under sink and I was very happy with it. I brought my own travel shower chair with a padded seat, and used the bench as a table for my shower stuff.

The tiles were angled so the water escaped a bit, but there were extra towels provided to clean up the water. The soap dispenser also had a minor leak so it dripped a bit, but was easy to wipe up. The garbage in the backroom was a foot pedal open garbage, but as a paraplegic it wasn’t the most convenient style of garbage to use, as I had to lift the lid with my hands since I couldn’t step on the pedal.

In the main room, there was a couple chairs and coat hangers. And a tv on the wall to watch shows. There was lots of space to maneuver and lots of room under the bed to place luggage. My only other minor complaint was that the bed was a bit high, and while I was able to transfer into bed from my wheelchair, other people may find the uphill transfer a challenge.

Lots of room to maneuver a wheelchair

The window of the room overlooks the parking lot, and you can see the famous three sisters mountains in the background.

There are lots of little shops located in the complex, and you could easily find everything you need without going too far. There were several restaurants, a coffee shop, a convenience store, a liquor store and a cannabis shop located underneath. The one night there was even a comedy show located in between the buildings, and we were lucky that we could hear it all for free when we went back to our room and opened the window (we would have stayed and watched it outside, but it was rainy and cold that night).

I was very impressed with the Canmore Downtown Hostel and I will definitely be back. For more information check out their website. It is a beautiful facility and is in a great location to explore Canmore!
